Vietnam Webquest

Directions:
  1. Take out your OWN sheet of paper
  2. Write Vietnam Webquest Notes at the top of the paper
  3. WRITE EACH QUESTION AND YOUR ANSWER TO EACH QUESTION
  4. This will be a classwork grade as well as notes (HINT: it’s also a lot of your vocabulary this week!)

Webquest Questions:
  1. What modern-day country was known as Indochina?
    Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia
  2. Who controlled this area in the early 1900s?
    France
  3. Who was Ho Chi Minh?
    Leader of the Viet Minh during the First Indochina war, leader of the viet cong in the vietnam war, president and prime minister of north vietnam
  4. What happened at the Geneva Conference?
    Vietnam will be split along the 17th parallel with a demilitarized zone.
  5. Why was Vietnam divided into north and south territories?  Who controlled each?
    N Vietnam will be governed by Ho Chi Minh and S Vietnam will be by the state of Vietnam/France. Each side had 300 days to withdraw from the opposite side-civilians could move to either side, many catholics from the North fled to the South this was known as: the PASSAGE OF FREEDOM. the division was supposed to be temporary lasting only two years until elections could be held.

    Is Vietnam still a communist country today?  Explain.
  9. Using the maps, describe how Vietnam was split.  What city was important to North Vietnam? What city was important to South Vietnam?
  10. What was the Ho Chi Minh trail?  Why was it important?
    A network of jungle paths winding from North Vietnam through Laos and Cambodia into South Vietnam. It is important because it was used as a military route by North Vietnam to supply the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War.
  11. Who were the Vietminh?
    A nationalist and communist led coalition made to achieve a fully unified Vietnam
  12. How are communism and the Vietnam War connected?
    The underlying theories of what the country should be after the war was won. For example, Minh proposed redistribution of land to all the people.
  13. What is the Domino Theory?  
    A foreign policy during the 1950s to 1980s that states if one one land in a region came under the influence of communism, than surrounding countries would follow.
  14. What was the Tet Offensive?
    A series of major attacks by communist forces in the Vietnam War. Early in 1968, Vietnamese communist troops seized and briefly held some major cities at the time of the lunar new year, or Tet.
